This book can be read as a stand-alone. However, it is a spin-off from the Solnyshko Duet and contains spoilers for those books if you haven’t read them.

REVIEW: ⟫ The Solnyshko Duet was the first experience of Ashlyn Drewek so finding out that Misha who featured in that duet had his own story made this a no-brainer. And like that duet, this book did not disappoint.

It would easy to get dragged down into the hell that life appears to be for Marek Sommers – he’s doing everything he can to take care of his siblings and save them from his nightmare of a mother, and yet he can’’t seem to catch a break. Throw in an abusive ex-lover who is determined to get Marek back and it’s perfectly obvious why Marek doesn’t trust Misha and everything he’s offering. I absolutely adored how stoic and consistent Misha would – he made himself a constant presence in Marek’s life, always there to lend a hand, a place to stay – something Marek hasn’t experienced.

It was even more touching with the fact that Misha was risking his life in how he was handling things with Marek – there was little doubt made of the fact that Sergei would have expected Misha to be more blunt in his discussions with Marek. The further insights into the views of the old-fashioned Russian brigade with regard to homosexual relationships and what they meant about the men involved with them were fascinating, albeit wince-inducing.

I loved the characters, especially Misha’s bodyguards who were incredibly loyal to him I also really enjoyed the fact that the brutal aspects of Misha’s life were not brushed over – from him making love with Marek with a single-minded determination to make everything about him juxtaposed with him handing out justice to the people who deserved it was handled extremely well.

There was a cameo from the Wolf and I loved the interactions between him and Marek – they made me laugh, especially after Misha got shot! The children in the story were written as children, not mini-adults which can often be the case. The slow burn was just long enough to make the interactions between Marek and Misha sizzle just that little bit more, and it was extremely satisfying watching them building such a normal relationship. Even after the truth of what Misha has done to get information out of Marek there wasn’t a miscommunication – Marek knew enough about the world to accept what Misha had done and why, and even appreciate the avenues he chose not to take.

This is a brutal mobster love story, very engaging, with excellent relationship building and a satisfying ending and merely confirmed my love for Ashlyn Drewek’s skilful writing.

Review: ⟫ This book was pretty darn good! The world building for the witches and necromancers and their history was very well done, as was the whole feud thing, and the sharp u-turn that things took so early in the book was an attention grabber. The intricacies of the different types of magic were really well handled, as was slotting the story into ‘history’ which really helped ground it in reality.

Surprising myself, I actually really liked the fact that Graeme kept going back and forth – he had spent his entire life being told one thing and it would have been unrealistic for him to suddenly believe the complete opposite just because Cassius told him so. I enjoyed the background cast of characters, and the overall feeling that no one was safe – it was a bit like watching a movie with an all unknown cast and realising that no one was too big a star to die!

I found the mystery of who the killer was intriguing, and the red herrings were really good! I did guess who was behind it all, but I actually didn’t mind that because the way the story ebbed and flowed really worked for me.

I found Cassius and Graeme both sweet, believable and incredibly snarky – like real, live teenagers which was refreshing. That, and the fact that sex was on their minds A LOT was very realistic.

I was so pleased to see that despite currently being a stand-alone novel, this was labelled as Tennebrose #1 because that hopefully means that there will be more set in this verse – I will be keeping my eyes open if that’s the case. I have found that I either love this author’s work or hate it, so I am extremely pleased to say this is definitely the same calibre as the Kidnapping of Roan Sinclair.

Review: ⟫ If this was an 18+ movie, I would tune in to see it with popcorn and a HUGE smile on my face!

I loved this slightly new take on vampires, especially the idea that the Queens ran the territories and the males lived kinda on their whims! Kinda.

We dived straight into the action with Eric in a less than glamorous environment, but it did give us a very good insight into the type of ‘person’ Eric is – prepared to do anything and everything to get the bad guy. Despite his many years on this earth, and his attempts at making himself seem uncaring, it was pretty obvious that Eric was one of the good guys.

Chase was a different type of person altogether – you could sense that there was very little holding him together as he tried to keep himself aloof and show an uncaring attitude to the world, whilst inside he was a lonely, scared boy in need of love and security.

And amidst all of that, we have a vampire serial killer, an out of control IA officer, and a queen vampire in need of a smack-down. Add in a werewolf from New Orleans, and this story was a sexy, riotous, gory ride that I absolutely adored. This was very entertaining, full of romance, some sex, and a serial killer case where there was absolutely no way the killer could safely be arrested, and it was a satisfying chunk of a read.

My only quibbles are that occasionally the timeline got a little squiffy for me – sometimes it seemed like not long had gone by at all, and then someone says something that lets you know that at least a few weeks have gone by – that kind of thing. And secondly, I think it could have been a bit shorter – some of it felt like it could have been removed and not missed. Finally, if Eric and Chase thought they were being discreet, I would hate to see them when they were being blatant about things, but to be honest, none of that really messed with my enjoyment of the story.

The Vengeance of Rowan Sinclair by Ashlyn Drewek (The Solynyshko Duet)

Review: ⟫ Oooh, when the sunshine turns on you, you need to remember that it burns! 

This book was Roan growing up and doing what he needed to do and I enjoyed it even more than the first book. Struggling to recover from the assault, Roan is feeling disconnected from everything and everyone – how does he find his way when he knows that he’s Sasha’s weak spot and can be used against him at any time? 

Add in his father behaving in an even more appalling fashion than previously, and something has to break. Or step up. And Roan steps up. 

I freaking loved this book because we got to see Roan really grow into himself and his relationship with Sasha. We also got more time with Sasha and saw beneath his mega-grumpy exterior. I wouldn’t describe him as a marshmallow under ANY circumstances, but this guy really grabbed at my heart and I couldn’t shake him. 

The cast of characters grew and I loved Misha and his nephew but this was most definitely Roan’s book. I actually ended up enjoying it more than book 1 which I am surprised at as normally I find the second book’s to be not as good. I absolutely adored the ending and what we got to see, and I am more than happy to give this a 5/5 rating. 

Now to find something to help me with my book hangover…

The Kidnapping of Roan Sinclair by Ashlyn Drewek (The Solnyshko Duet)

Review: ⟫ This was a recommendation on sub-reddit and I am so pleased I went ahead and got it. 

Roan was a sweetheart – a complete ray of sunshine in the darkness of his world. His family life is awful and he’s on the verge of being pushed in a direction that he has no interest in going. That is when Sasha enters his life and absolutely everything changes. 

Sasha was – brutal. He wasn’t just grumpy, he was rude, violent and the epitome of a Russian mobster. This book held nothing back in terms of the type of person Sasha was, who he had had to become in order to survive. There were hints given as to the type of life Sasha had lived, the things he had been through, and they sounded traumatic and awful. 

The clash between sunshine and the Wolf was epic – entertaining, upsetting, sexy and life altering. Watching the dynamics between these two as they tried to figure out a way through what life was throwing at them and how the circumstances under which they met influenced everything was enthralling. 

I would most definitely heed the warnings given but for me, this book was worth all of that for the feelings it evoked. I went immediately to book two because I needed to know what happened next. Thank goodness for Kindle Unlimited.

Each book can be read as a standalone, or together. If you're a MM fan, I suggest skipping MYSTERY and starting here. There's FTB/vague MF sex scenes, but the MM angst starts in this book before continuing into DAMNATION.

Review: ⟫ I skipped the first book in this series because I seriously wasn’t interested in reading the M/F aspect of things – I’ve read three MF books recently that reminded me quite strongly of why I prefer MM. And it clearly states in the blurb that you should start here if you are an MM fan. But this book was full of Leander’s relationships (or rather relations) with women and I felt duped. 

Yes, we meet Bennett and there are delicious indications of what he and Leander could/will be to each other. But that is the extent of it and I thought that there would be more. I didn’t feel any chemistry between Leander and Lorelei, even less between him and Gracie. I have awarded the two stars for the look into Leander’s inner psyche, as well as the machinations/planning of the group to handle the whole thing about Leander being on trial for four murders. 

The twists, turns and background stories were very interesting, but the overlay of Lorelei and Gracie made this book a bitter experience for me, especially coming straight from Roan Sinclair to this. 

 I do have the next book in the series lined up on my kindle because I want to know about Leander and Bennett after meeting them in the Roan Sinclair duology, but I can’t in all honesty recommend this to fans of MM because although there are hints of it, this didn’t strike me as a MM book. Disappointed and wary going into the next one.
